On the surface, it does not seem likely that the lives of a young Amish widow with two young children and a social services investigator would intersect. In A Dream of Miracles, a novel by Ruth Reid, their paths do cross and they enter into a complex relationship.
Mattie Diener is doing all she can for her children since her husband died. When her young son is hospitalized with suspicious symptoms, Bo Lambright is sent to investigate a physician’s allegations. Even though he feels Mattie has not harmed her child, things spiral downhill very quickly. Bo’s attempts to clear Mattie of any wrongdoing are heroic, but will they be enough? At the same time, Bo struggles with his personal history and the world he now lives in.
This well told story follows the characters through their challenges. Even though Mattie and Bo live in different worlds, a bond between them grows. They are both courageous and vulnerable. Will it take a miracle for them to forge a future together?
I found this to be an engrossing and compelling story. It is easy to read and thought provoking, as well. Highly recommended.
