ISLE of SHADOWS by Tracy L. Higley ISBN 978-1-4016-8744-1 Thomas Nelson

ISLE of SHADOWS by Tracy L. Higley is a historical fiction novel. The story opens in Rhodes during the year 227 BC with the main character, Tessa of Delos, planning her suicide. She is a hetaera which is a ” courtesan, or professional female companion” and for ten long years she belonged to the influential politician Glaucus. Tessa is beautiful and outspoken, but she is not free. Freedom is what she yearns for.
Her method of survival was simple- she does not allow herself to feel anything for if she does she becomes more vulnerable than she already is. She trusts no one. Because of Glaucus’s untimely death, Tessa forms a plan to escape Rhodes. She meets with obstacles every step of the way. Simeon, the Jewish head servant of Glaucus’s household, quickly becomes her ally and tries to help her. Nikos arrives at Glaucus’s home telling Tessa and Simeon that Glaucus hired him. Neither Tessa or Simeon trust him. Tessa’s world is filled with people who cannot be trusted and who must be feared.
The story line takes many twists and turns and keeps the reader totally engaged. Politics, assassination plots, greed, prejudice, love and faith are components of the story. The characters are complex and well developed and the author does an excellent job of telling their story. This is a beautifully written book and I highly recommend reading it.
I received this book free from the publisher through book review program. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
